Red Hot Chili Peppers dedicate band’s global icon award to Taylor Hawkins at VMAs: ‘Fly on, brother’

Red Hot Chili Peppers paid tribute to Taylor Hawkins in their acceptance speech at the MTV .

They made the sweet gesture after being presented with the global icon award by US comedy-stoner duo Cheech and Chong.

The comedians praised the ‘enduring mark on the world’ the Los Angeles-based rockers had made as they introduced them to the stage.

Bassist Flea dedicated the trophy to Hawkins, who was the late drummer of the Foo Fighters.

‘There’s another musical legend and his name is Taylor Hawkins… I miss him every day,’ he told the audience.

‘Fly on, brother.’

In March this year, Hawkins  during the band’s tour in Colombia.

Foo Fighters  and appearance at the  in the wake of his death, which the group described as a ‘tragic and untimely loss’ in a statement.

Elsewhere in his acceptance speech, Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis thanked ‘the sassy mistress known as MTV’ and their fans for the award, as well as his band mates for giving him ‘a purpose in life’.

The band – who have eight other VMAs to their name – later gave an energetic performance medley of their songs, including hits such as , from latest album Unlimited Love, and their 2003 single Can’t Stop.

Members Anthony Kiedis, Flea, and Chad Smith, also provided some…t this year, jumping into each other’s arms and dangling upside down – as you do.

Other memorable moments of the night – because the VMAs is never short of those – included Taylor Swift’s bombshell announcement of her 10th studio album, and Johnny Depp’s virtual comeback in the form of a moonperson.

Big winners of the night included Nicki Minaj, who scooped the coveted vanguard video award and delivered an epic medley of her biggest hits.

Harry Styles was the only Brit to take home a gong, while Jack Harlow and Lil Nas X, Blackpink, and BTS also left with trophies.
