A black SUV drove into an Apple store, killing one person and trapping and injuring other customers.

The Toyota 4Runner plowed into the Apple store at the Derby Street Shops in Hingham, Massachusetts, shortly before 11am on Monday.

A man died and 16 people were injured in what is an ‘active criminal investigation’, said Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz.

The SUV created a massive hole on the glass front of the store. The vehicle was lodged against the back wall of the store, trapping several customers inside. Fourteen people were transported to South Shore Hospital and two victims were taken to other hospitals in the Boston area.

‘This morning was an unthinkable morning, and people are trying to process what happened,’ said Cruz. ‘This investigation is active and ongoing, and we are very limited as to what we can say at this point.’

Cruz added that family members were being notified.

Multiple people were outside the store receiving treatment from dozens of first responders. A medic helicopter was dispatched to the scene. Police called for a tow truck to remove the SUV, which was still inside the store as of 1.30pm.

Bystanders were the first to provide aid to the victims, according to Hingman Fire Chief Steve Murphy

‘We are unable to provide any updates on (the victims’) condition right now, but we want to thank everyone that was involved in helping in this situation,’ Murphy said.

One shopper, Frank O’Brien, was shocked at how fast the SUV plowed into the store.

‘You’d have to really be picking up speed to end up in the storage area at the back side of the Apple store,’ O’Brien told .

An MBTA bus was on the way to the scene to serve as triage.

People were on the sidewalk in front of the store at the time of the crash.

‘The Apple store is a very busy place. It’s the Monday of a holiday week,’ Cruz said. ‘I don’t know exactly how many people were in there. I’m sure we will find out… We are going to go slow and steady with this, and get the information as we get it.’

The Apple store is part of the outdoor shopping plaza with 64 businesses in Hingham, which is about 20 miles southeast of Boston.
