‘Monsoon’ flash floods inundate Las Vegas casinos leaving gamblers soaked

Hotels and casinos on the Las Vegas Strip and nearby were drenched by floodwaters as a ‘monsoon’ level storm flooded the region Thursday night and Friday morning.

Videos shared on social media showed rainwater pouring down on casino floors. In , onlookers can be seen watching rain fall through a massive hole on the roof of the Planet Hollywood Casino.

Photos and videos started appearing on social media just hours after the National Weather Service (NWS) declared a severe thunderstorm warning for the valley.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue responded to 330 incidents since the storm started around 9pm – including rescuing seven people from swift water.

No injuries were reported as of Friday afternoon, and casinos remained open to customers.

‘While Planet Hollywood did experience minor damage due to last night’s storm, it is operating as normal today,’ Caesars Entertainment told Metro.co.uk. ‘Repairs are already underway, and we do not expect them to impact our guest experience.’

The NWS warned of thunderstorms, 60 mph wind, and ‘pea-sized hail’ in a large area that included Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Lone Mountain and Centennial Hills.

Around midnight, the NWS recorded a gust of wind at 48 mph at North Las Vegas Airport.

At one point, 13th Street was closed due to a fallen tree in the roadway, the fire department .

The rain ended around 3am, according to the NWS, but excessive runoff and standing water remained throughout the city.

By the morning commute, all westbound lanes on Interstate 15 were still flooded, reported.

Monsoon season typically occurs from late June to mid-September, according to the . As humid air from the Pacific Ocean moves inland, it produces ‘fast and powerful’ thunderstorms that can spark wildfires and flash floods.

Monsoons can also produce downbursts – ‘concentrated downdrafts of rain and wind’ that can cause damage equivalent to that of a tornado.

Circa did not immediately return a request for comment.

Despite the torrential rain, City of Las Vegas confirmed to Metro.co.uk that all of southern Nevada remains in a drought.

The storms have ended in Vegas, but much of the southwest remains on flood watch, including almost all of nearby Arizona.
