Two teenage girls have been arrested and charged in a that ended with the man’s death.
The teenagers, aged 13 and 15, have not been named by police. Another 16-year-old girl is still wanted for her role in the attack.
The pair were charged with gang assault and theft of service.
The attack happened on August 13, after a group of three teenage girls and two boys in their early 20s took a $70 cab ride from the Bronx to the Rockaways in Queens.
When the driver dropped them off near the Arverne Playground at 6.20am, the kids tried to rob him.
The attack was caught on surveillance footage from nearby businesses. The cabby, Kutin Gyimah, tried to catch up with the fleeing teens on the street.
The group pounced on Gyimah, 52, punching and kicking him on the pavement.
After Gyimah stood back up, one of the boys threw a punch, causing him to fall on his back and hit his head on the sidewalk.
Gyimah was taken to St Johns Hospital in Far Rockaway, where he was pronounced dead. He was the father of four children, all under the age of 10.
A set up to support the family had raised over $200,000 as of Wednesday afternoon.
Police say Austin Amos, 20, threw the punch that caused Gyimah to fall and hit his head. He turned himself in to police on Thursday and was charged with manslaughter, gang assault and theft of service.
His friend, Nickolas Porter, 20, also faces charges of gang assault and theft of service.
Amos faces up to 25 years in prison, while Porter faces up to 15 years.
‘An entire family is now grieving the tragic and senseless loss of their loved one because of this abhorrent behavior,’ stated Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz.
The district attorney’s office has not said what charges the girls will face.
